The Denali National Park and Mt. McKinley are located in south central Alaska between Anchorage and Fairbanks on Rt. 3. You can fly into either city and then rent a car, ride a bus, or hitch a ride with a local "bush pilot" for a fee. There also is a train station near the park.
With nine thousand miles of mountains and wilderness, this park is a hiking and adventure travel paradise. Wildlife such as grizzly bear, moose, caribou, dall sheep and wolves are noticeable and we would like to recommend wearing a small bell when hiking so you don't sneak up on a protective mama bear. Wildflowers are abundant and the snow-capped peaks remind us of nature's grandeur.
Beware that some of the guided tours of the park start at 5:30 AM and last about 6 hours with a lack of bathroom breaks. Mt. McKinley is simply known as "the mountain" as it towers over the park as the world's tallest peak from base to summit. The best time to visit is in August when the fall colors peak.
