The Vail Valley offers backcountry mountain and national forest recreation opportunities for summer travelers. The winter ski lift operates most of the summer for great downhill mountain biking opportunities while the ritzy restaurants and shops slow down and come back to Earth during the summer season. Vail is close to the White River National Forest which offers two wilderness areas with an abundance of trails for hiking, mountain biking, camping, and fishing.
Modeled after a European ski town, the streets in Vail Village are pedestrian only allowing easy access to fine shopping and gourmet dining with ample free summer parking for quick getaways to local trail heads. Nearby, Beaver Creek is home to the renowned Vilar Center for the Arts. The towns of Edwards, Minturn and Redcliff, also part of Vail Valley, are steeped in mining history streatching back to the mid 1800's.
